The Plan view: structuring your manuscript
The Plan view gives you a bird's-eye view of your entire manuscript structure: acts, chapters, and scenes laid out in a collapsible outline.
Structure overview
- Acts — top-level containers (Prologue, Act 1–N, Epilogue)
- Chapters — group scenes; can be named or auto-numbered
- Scenes — the smallest writing unit; each scene has its own content in the Write view
Adding and organizing
Click + Scene, + Chapter, or + Act buttons at the appropriate level to add new items. Drag and drop any item to reorder within its level, or move scenes between chapters.
Chapter and scene metadata
Click a chapter or scene name to open its detail panel on the right:
- Override name — custom title instead of "Chapter 3"
- Summary / notes — visible in Plan view as an inline preview; also used as AI context
- In-world date — anchor the chapter or scene to a specific point in your world's timeline
- Act — assign or reassign an act
Collapse and expand
Use Expand All / Collapse All in the toolbar to manage long outlines. You can also click the triangle on any act or chapter to collapse just that section.
Inline scene preview
Hover over a scene row and click Preview to see the first few lines of its prose without leaving the Plan view.
