Organising Chapters with Acts

Acts let you group chapters into named structural sections — Part One, Act II, Prologue, or any division that fits your story. Enable acts from the Plan tab in Studio.

Enabling Acts

Open a draft in Studio, go to Plan, and toggle Use Acts in the draft settings. Once enabled, you can create acts and assign chapters to them.

Creating and Naming Acts

Click + New Act in the Plan view to add an act. Give it a name (Part One, Act II, etc.) or leave it as the default. Acts display as column headers in the Plan grid.

Assigning Chapters to Acts

New chapters created inside an act are automatically assigned to it. To move a chapter to a different act, drag it to the target act column. The chapter is reassigned immediately — the chapter list in both the Plan view and the Write sidebar updates without a page refresh.

Chapter Numbering Across Acts

When acts are enabled, chapter numbers count continuously across acts in act-order: the first chapter of Act 2 picks up where Act 1 left off. Chapter numbers shown in the Write view, Plan view, and export always match.

Chapters without an act assignment (orphan chapters) are appended at the end of the Write sidebar unnumbered, and are excluded from exports.

Act Order

Drag act columns left or right in the Plan view to reorder them. The export respects the act order shown in Plan.

Disabling Acts

Toggling Use Acts off removes the act grouping from all views. Your chapters are kept and their order preserved — they just display as a flat list.
